Tottenham Hotspur made it two wins from two Premier League games under interim manager Ryan Mason on Sunday with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Sheffield United – but Spurs fans were surprised by an impressive cameo from Steven Bergwijn.
Bergwijn, 23, edged closer to 50 appearances for Tottenham on Sunday as Gareth Bale netted a brilliant hat-trick for Spurs against the Blades to push Spurs up into fifth place. The Netherlands man replaced Bale for the last 15 minutes.
Signed for £25million (Goal), Bergwijn was used regularly by Jose Mourinho above Bale because of his work rate and his willingness to play defensively. But it has also seen the wide man fail to score in his 33 games this term. He has just three in 49.
Plenty of criticism has come his way because of that, but Bergwijn – with more attacking freedom under interim boss Ryan Mason – looked lively against the Blades and laid on an excellent assist for Son Heung-min, driving forward and finding Son.
Spurs fans reacted on Twitter to his late display for Spurs and Mason. Many were surprised by his brief cameo role, with numerous fans claiming he looked more confident when in possession. One supporter even claimed he was “better than Dele”.
