Tottenham Hotspur have been knocked out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage as Liverpool ran out 4-1 winners on aggregate.
Tottenham went to Anfield boasting a 1-0 lead but they were no match for the Reds, who beat them 4-0 on the night to reach the League Cup final.
Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the 34th minute, and Tottenham were lucky to only be 1-0 down by the time the half-time whistle blew.
However, Liverpool didn’t relent and ended up winning comprehensively as Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk all struck in the second half.
The game also saw Mathys Tel make his debut for Tottenham after joining the club on transfer deadline day.
The Bayern Munich loanee came on at the break, and Spurs fans spotted him doing something which shocked them.
Admittedly, it wasn’t so much what Tel was doing per se, so much as what his new teammates did – or more appropriately, failed to do – in response.

Mathys Tel constantly waved Tottenham teammates on to little avail
Tottenham fans noted that, after coming on, Tel was regularly waving his teammates on to push forward.
However, his teammates actually pushing on didn’t happen particularly often, leading to Spurs supporters despairing over what they were seeing.
One fan wrote on X: “Tel is literally telling the players to push forward. This is embarrassing…”
Another supporter said: “The new hire telling his experienced co-workers to do their job.
“Tel is literally waving, pleading for his teammates to press forward. This is disgusting.”
Many others spotted what Tel was doing and criticised his teammates, with one fan saying: “Tel waving the team forward, no one moves…”
Another said: “Tel is the only one that’s waving everyone on and asking to keep pushing while Son and others walk around.”
And another wrote: “Every time I see Tel he’s waving his teammates to either get up the pitch or get out of the box to press.
“Played one game, and he’s already seen one of our biggest problems.”
How Tel fared in Tottenham debut
Tel didn’t have a particularly great time against Liverpool, but it’s not as though he could do much, given the circumstances.
Tottenham were meek throughout, while Liverpool were determined to ensure that their loss in the first leg would quickly become inconsequential.

Tel did try to make things happen, not least with his constant attempting to wave the team on, and he did manage one key pass and a couple of progressive deliveries forward.
However, it wasn’t to be, and Tel and Tottenham will have to recover from this missed opportunity and look to kick on in the Premier League and try to progress in the FA Cup.
