Bereft of some of his top players in the shape of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Mauricio Pochettino had to come up with a tactical masterplan to beat Borussia Dortmund last night.
The opening 45 minutes was an exercise in both sides sizing each other up but it gave Pochettino enough pointers to see what he needed to do to give Tottenham a first-leg advantage to take to Germany.
Heung-min Son and Jan Vertonghen had already put Spurs 2-0 to the good on the back of a rampant second half display by the time Fernando Llorente was brought on.
Pochettino’s preference for pace on the night meant that Llorente did not get the nod from the off, but his attitude when he came off the bench was exemplary.

The Spaniard mucked in defensively and got a third Tottenham goal within just minutes of coming onto the pitch, topping off an outstanding night.
Llorente has taken his fair share of flak since being charged with replacing Kane’s goalscoring burden but chipped i with a vital goal against Chelsea in the EFL Cup last month and has now got on the scoresheet in the best European night of Pochettino’s reign.
That has served to change the perception many supporters had of the hitman and we’ve put together some of that reaction…
