Tottenham fans slate Davinson Sanchez after international call-up

Davinson Sanchez has been included in the latest Colombia squad ahead of the upcoming international break – and some Tottenham fans on Twitter have ripped into him.

The 23-year-old defender has started the season in the heart of the Spurs backline and been the preferred option next to Toby Alderweireld, with Jan Vertonghen currently overlooked by manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Sanchez already has 22 senior international caps for Colombia and has been named (official Twitter) in the latest ahead of friendly matches against Brazil and Venezuela.

But a selection of Spurs supporters on social media have responded to his call-up and have sent a wave of negative messages.

Some have suggested he doesn’t return to the squad after the international break, while others are bitterly disappointed he is currently getting the nod ahead of Vertonghen at centre-back.

Sanchez hasn’t started the campaign in the best of form, but it seems like he is being scapegoated slightly and a lot of the team’s problems have been going forward.

The North London club have four points from their opening three league games and haven’t quite got up to top gear in terms of their attacking play.

It’s easy to pick out for Sanchez for criticism when Vertonghen is left on the sidelines, but he’s not the sole issue and is still a young exciting defender that is continuing to grow under Pochettino.

He will make mistakes at times and the manager has shown he’s willing to put faith in developing stars.

Spurs face Arsenal in the North London derby on Sunday and the pace of Sanchez could be needed to handle the likes of Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
