As Tottenham Hotspur finally returned to winning ways in the Premier League by beating Brentford 2-0 on Sunday, Djed Spence was arguably their standout performer.
Spence has garnered praise from Pedro Porro for his incredible turnaround in a Spurs shirt, as he showed against Thomas Frank’s side with a brilliant overall display.
Ange Postecoglou has lauded Spence’s revival at Tottenham down to his brilliant work ethic as well.
Djed Spence, who started as a left-back against Brentford had the sizable task of keeping Bryan Mbeumo quiet.

Tottenham fans agree Djed Spence was their best player vs Brentford
As Spence managed to tame Mbeumo, Tottenham fans were full of praise for the Englishman as they collectively felt he was outstanding against Brentford. One fan wrote: “Spence MOTM. Been immense. We had this guy on the bench/out of the squad all season until December. But, but, but ‘attitude, bad loan, not good enough.’
Another Spurs supporter claimed Spence, who James Maddison has praised had an incredible game, writing: “Must say Spence has been different gravy all game. Has definitely staked a claim as a starter over the last couple months.” A third Lilywhites fan added: “What a player Djed Spence is. Absolutely class again today.”
A fourth Tottenham fan feels Spence was their best player against Brentford, stating: “Djed Spence has been our best player so far today, brilliant performance.” A fifth Tottenham fan lauded Spence was limiting Mbeumo’s influence on proceedings, claiming: “Djed Spence has absolutely locked up Mbeumo. What a player.”
Finally, a sixth supporter went on to claim that Spence, who was not in Postecoglou’s plans earlier this season has become England’s best full-back: “I am just in complete awe watching Djed Spence play football. Absolutely cannot believe he was neglected for almost three years and sold to Genoa for €15 million (£12.5 million). This in England’s best full-back.”
“Absolutely nothing he cannot do. His ability to drive with the ball, matched with his strength makes him so, so potent going forward, whilst defensively he is a rock.”
Ange Postecoglou is forming a bond with Djed Spence at Tottenham
Spence and Ange Postecoglou are forming a bond behind the scenes, as reflected on the joke they shared with each other ahead of Tottenham’s 3-0 win against Tamworth in the FA Cup.
Journalist Alasdair Gold revealed: “We know Postecoglou doesn’t do small talk but there was a funny moment when it was him and a couple of the players, Djed Spence was one of them.”
“Djed was standing there and he was there with sunglasses on and this big woolly hat, sat high up on his head but Ange was just a bit obsessed with it and he kept looking and laughing. He said something to Spence which made him laugh and it was so ‘un-Ange-like’.
“You see him say the odd thing to players but this was quite unusual, but who knows maybe there is an Ange-Djed relationship forming.”
If Spence continues to perform like he did against Brentford by being a threat offensively and a rock defensively, he will remain in Ange Postecoglou’s good books.
