Tottenham’s academy star Jamie Bowden celebrated on Twitter after the club’s progress to the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday night – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter tipped him for a bright future.
The 17-year-old defensive midfielder was part of a 22-man squad (Football.London) that travelled to Manchester City for the second leg of a Champions League quarter-final.
He wasn’t named in the final 18-man squad for the European tie, but was involved in the wild post-match celebrations on the pitch.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side were beaten 4-3 on the night by their English rivals, but progressed in the tournament via the away goal rule after it ended up 4-4 on aggregate to set up a meeting with Dutch giants Ajax.
Raheem Sterling (two), Heung-Min Son (two) and Bernando Silva were all on the scoresheet within a crazy opening 21 minutes of the game, which left Manchester City 3-2 in front on the night.
Pep Guardiola’s team then took the ascendancy in the second-half with Sergio Aguero’s strike, but substitute Fernando Llorente bundled in what turned out to be a vital response to see his side progress.
There was even more drama too, as Raheem Sterling’s stoppage time goal was overturned by VAR on an unforgettable night of football.
Spurs teenager Bowden posted on social media after the game and was delighted to be involved in some shape.
“WHAT A NIGHT!!!! Unbelievable result and experience,” the academy product wrote on Twitter.
With Harry Winks and Eric Dier both ruled out through injury, it did see Bowden come into the preliminary squad and perhaps he is the next breakout star that will come through.
Here are some Spurs fans responding to Bowden’s message:
What a night for a young player to experience that tonight… hope you push on and enjoy every minute of it
