Reports from The Athletic claim that Tottenham are willing to listen to offers for defender Matt Doherty in the January window. But Spurs fans are keen on seeing Doherty used in a swap deal, to sign Norwich ace Max Aarons.

Doherty, 29, has struggled ever since his move to Tottenham from Wolves in the summer of 2020. The 25-time Ireland international has only managed to play 38 times for Spurs in his 18 months with the North London club.

The ex-Wolves man was only afforded his second start under Antonio Conte on Wednesday night, as Spurs beat West Ham 2-1 in the Carabao Cup quarter-final. Goals from Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura saw Spurs win the game.

But it comes after The Athletic report that Spurs will listen to offers for Doherty in the January window. It remains to be seen if there is any Premier League interest in Doherty – or interest from overseas in the coming weeks.

Could Tottenham use Doherty to their advantage – and sign Aarons?

Of course, if Doherty leaves – Tottenham will need a replacement. CalcioMercato recently reported that Tottenham want to sign Norwich right-back Aarons. They face competition from Everton and Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

At 21, Aarons has been a regular for Norwich. Already, the English ace is only three games shy of clocking up150 appearances for the Canaries. Spurs fans have suggested a player-plus-cash deal involving Doherty, for Aarons.
