Tottenham lost more ground in the race for the Champions League spots with a 1-0 defeat against Southampton yesterday.

Danny Ings netted the only goal of the game as a Spurs produced a wretched performance to round off the festive period during which Jose Mourinho’s honeymoon period truly ended.

Tottenham look devoid of confidence and ideas, and lacked fight and intensity all over the pitch against the struggling Saints, who fully deserved their win.

Jan Vertonghen is one of the players at the club entering the final throws of his contract – which Spotrac claim is worth £100,000 per week – and is now free to talk to potential suitors.

He and Toby Alderweireld were caught out by a simple long ball for the winning goal and Vertonghen also missed a chance to level the score in the first half.

Tottenham’s lack of midfield movement meant that Vertonghen was forced into a huge amount of long balls, which saw Spurs struggle badly to create a head of steam.

Vertonghen was criticised on Twitter for being over the hill. Mourinho was always going to favour his experience over the likes of Davinson Sanchez and now the Portuguese has to prove his mettle because he is yet to create a discernible change in his side’s fortunes.
