Tottenham Hotspur reportedly made an approach to sign Ajax star Edson Alvarez in the January transfer window, but the Dutch club prevented a move – and Spurs fans have reacted to the link on Twitter.
Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf have claimed that Spurs and MLS side LA Galaxy approached Ajax in the January window over a move for the Mexico international, who is not particularly happy at Ajax given his inconsistent game time.
Alvarez joined Erik Ten Hag’s side in the summer from Club America for a fee of £13million (De Telegraaf), and has since played 21 times in all competitions. But he has remained an unused substitute in 10 of Ajax’s last 12 league games.

However, when Tottenham and the Galaxy came calling in January, director of football Marc Overmars and manager Ten Hag decided to reject an offer – despite his lack of game time. He has a contract at Ajax until the summer of 2024.
Alvarez can play at right-back, at centre-back and as a holding midfielder – the latter of which he has done more frequently than other positions since his move to the Netherlands. That versatility, though, may be something Jose Mourinho is after.
Tottenham fans reacted on Twitter to the reported news that their club tried to sign Alvarez in the January window, and many have urged their club to re-enter the summer market for Alvarez. A move, as per the report, is likelier to occur then.
