Tottenham fans react as youngster Jack Roles is released

Youngster Jack Roles has ended a 16-year association with Tottenham Hotspur after he was released from his contract earlier today.

The youngster started with the Spurs academy from a very young age but leaves having failed to make a first-team appearance.

He spent the 2020/21 campaign out on loan. First, he was sent to Burton but after struggling for game time, finished the season at Stevenage.

It’s now the end of the Tottenham road for Roles and he becomes a free agent ahead of the transfer window.

Roles enjoyed a decent spell with Cambridge during 2019/20. He scored five goals in 15 appearances and shone during his time at the club.

Now the 22-year-old will be on the lookout for a new club. Given that he has experience in League One and League Two, he will surely have options.

The ex-Cyprus under-21 international typically operates as a midfielder but can also play on the right or left.

He is one of a number of youngsters to be released by Tottenham this summer.

Danny Rose and Paulo Gazzaniga are the two high-profile players to have seen their contracts expire in North London.

It would seem as though the Roles departure has been met with some upset among the fan base.

Plenty have taken to Twitter to wish the youngster well in the next chapter of his career.

Could Tottenham regret Roles departure?

Probably not, although they might wish they’d given him a chance in a cup competition along the way.

The youngster has looked good when called upon for he under-23 ranks and it’s a surprise he’s not at least managed a cup outing.

Roles will now try and forge a career somewhere else, probably in the Football League and clearly, Tottenham fans wish him well.

Tottenham have plenty of quality in midfield and it’s perhaps easy to see why he’s been allowed to leave.

The challenge for Roles now is to prove the North Londoners wrong.
