Tottenham Hotspur’s U21 team have achieved something that the first-team failed to do: beat Colchester United on penalties.
The Spurs youngsters returned to the scene where – last month – Tottenham’s senior side crashed out of the EFL Cup. Colchester beat Spurs on penalties after a 0-0 draw in Essex.
But the U’s could not get the better of Tottenham’s U21s. After the game ended 1-1, the Spurs youngsters won 6-5 on penalties to add an extra point in the EFL Trophy group stage.

This gave Tottenham fans some ironic cheer. The so-called first-team stars were undone by Colchester on penalties. Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura missed their spot-kicks that night.
The youthful Spurs team that travelled to Colchester also missed two penalties yesterday. Harvey White and Phoenix Patterson could not convert from 12 yards. But Colchester missed twice too with Jonathan de Bie making a decent save.
Spurs fans flocked to Twitter to laugh at the current situation. They compared the U21s win to the senior side’s failure. Here are some tweets discussing Tottenham U21s penalty shoot-out victory over League Two side Colchester.
