Steven Bergwijn has returned to Tottenham Hotspur already from international duty after Netherlands medical staff decided he is lacking the required fitness – and Spurs fans have applauded Jose Mourinho.
Bergwijn, 23, was called up by the Netherlands with his country taking on Spain in a friendly on Wednesday – before facing Bosnia and then Poland in the UEFA Nations League throughout the two-week international break.
However, the £27million (BBC) signing has been immediately sent home by the Netherlands after checks with the medical staff. Netherlands posted a statement on their website, confirming the ex-PSV star had left.
“The Tottenham Hotspur attacker was examined by Orange’s medical staff on arrival in Zeist on Monday. It turned out that he is not fit enough and that the Orange matches must pass by.”

Bergwijn had failed to earn a place in Tottenham’s matchday squad during four of the club’s last five Premier League matches, but did start during the 3-3 draw against West Ham. He has featured against Antwerp and Ludogorets.
The move is a boost for Spurs. While Bergwijn is unable to add to nine Netherlands caps, he can now return to Spurs and regain some fitness – as well as proving to Mourinho why he deserves to be in the Spurs side.
Tottenham supporters responded to the news that Bergwijn had returned to the club on Twitter, and many believe Mourinho’s magic is at work – suggesting the manager wanted Bergwijn not to feature during the break.
Others meanwhile think he could have an injury, while one supporter has questioned his weight.
