Tottenham fans react as report says unnamed London club join Arsenal in tabling player-plus-cash deal
Arsenal and an unnamed London club have reportedly tabled a player-plus-cash deal to sign Leicester star James Maddison. The England international has enjoyed another stellar 20-21 campaign – but could leave the Foxes this summer. Tottenham fans are hoping they are the club after Maddison.
Maddison, 24, had a hand in 21 goals during 42 league and cup appearances for the Foxes last season. Of those 21, 15 came in the Premier League despite the Leicester no.10 missing seven of his club’s 38 league games. Such form has attracted the attention of Arsenal this summer.
Football London report that Arsenal have tabled a player-plus-cash deal to sign £60million-rated Maddison. It is unclear which player has been included in a deal for the ex-Norwich City and Coventry City ace. But Football London does name drop three players that it could be.
They say English trio Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock are all possible makeweights in a deal for Maddison. Willock starred on loan at Newcastle during the second half of last season, scoring eight goals in 14 appearances for The Toon. Nketiah and Nelson are out of contract in 2022.
Unnamed club: Do Spurs need a player like Maddison, amid Arsenal offer?
The report also states that unnamed London club have joined Arsenal in tabling a player-plus-cash offer to sign Maddison. That could be one of a handful of clubs – but the most-likely two are Chelsea and Tottenham. A move to West Ham would be a backwards step for a player on fire.
Chelsea already boast numerous options in that position. Both Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech were regulars in the 10 role last term – while Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have returned from loans at Aston Villa and Fulham. So, the chances are that it could be Tottenham making the bid.
Do Tottenham need Maddison? Well, they have Dele Alli who has been impressive during pre-season. The England international has scored goals, created some and even worn the captain’s armband under Nuno Espirito Santo. He looks as though he will be given a central role in the side.
Gio Lo Celso caught the eye at Copa America but is yet to return to Tottenham training, as he is given an extended break. Tanguy Ndombele blows hot and cold – though the aforementioned duo are more likely to play deeper in midfield. Lucas Moura is better from the right flank.
What do Tottenham fans think?
Clearly, Spurs could do with a number 10 to rival Dele for a place behind the striker – whether that is Harry Kane, remains to be seen. Dele has been solid this summer and looks as though he might have a new lease of life under Nuno. But if he struggles again, where do Tottenham turn?
Maddison gives them that other option and given the way he played last season, he is probably a better player than Dele right now. Tottenham fans took to Twitter to discuss the possibility that they are the unnamed club to have made a player-plus-cash offer for Maddison – and many want him.
