Eric Dier is reportedly in contract talks with Tottenham Hotspur as the north London club look to avoid seeing the Englishman enter the final 12 months of his current deal – and Spurs fans have reacted on Twitter to the reported news.
The Daily Star has claimed that 26-year-old Dier is in talks over a new deal with Spurs, but will only sign a new contract on one condition – that he is given assurances over playing at centre-back for the foreseeable future, rather than midfield.
Dier, who has had a very topsy-turvy campaign under both Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho, is due to enter the final year of his £60,000-a-week deal (Spotrac) on June 30. Whether he deserves a new deal is another question.
Starting the campaign in midfield, Dier plummeted down the pecking order following the signings of Gio Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele. Mourinho’s arrival saw him given a chance again, but he did not take it.
However, Mourinho is clearly a fan of the 40-time England international and he has since moved the £4million (ESPN) signing back into central defence – his natural position. He has started the last three games, and impressed for Spurs.
The Covid-19 suspension probably came at the wrong time for Dier – who also hit the headlines of late for jumping into the crowd to confront a supporter. Many Tottenham fans responded to the news he could sign a new contract.

Keep Dier. He’s a much better centre back than midfielder & distribution is good too.
I know he’s made costly errors but I’d give @JuanMFoyth a run at defensive midfielder. He’s good on the ball (which has led to errors) and will be very solid there with better decision making.

Give him a 1 year extension, if he continues to improve keep him, if not, sell

That’s good Bc he has proven time and time again he cannot play in the midfield.
