Tottenham fans react as Pape Matar Sarr called-up to Senegal's AFCON squad
Tottenham Hotspur will have a player at the African Cup of Nations after summer signing Pape Matar Sarr was included in Senegal’s squad, ahead of next month’s tournament. Tottenham fans have reacted on Twitter to Sarr’s call-up.
Sarr, 19, has yet to play for Tottenham since joining the club for a fee of £14.5million (Mail) from Metz in the summer. That is because he has immediately rejoined Metz on loan, in their fight against relegation during the 21-22 season.
Spurs chose to take a chance on the holding midfielder despite having only played 25 times in all competitions for Metz before the start of the season. This term, he had played in all of Metz’s first 18 games, before missing the 19th.
His form has been impressive. While Metz have only won three of their 19 games, Sarr has helped his side to seven draws too – as they sit in 18th place in Ligue 1. Sarr even scored in a recent 4-1 win over Lorient.
That form has seen Senegal choose to reward the Tottenham midfielder ahead of the African Cup of Nations – by awarding him a place his country’s squad. Senegal are expected to be one of the favourites for the competition.
What are Tottenham fans saying as Sarr called-up by Senegal?
Tottenham have no other African players in their side – making the tournament something hardly of interest to Spurs fans. But Sarr’s inclusion is likely to prompt many Tottenham fans to watch how their new signing gets on.
Indeed, with Spurs fans yet to learn much about Sarr – watching him at the African Cup of Nations, alongside Sadio Mane and Edouard Mendy – will certainly give them an indication as to where Sarr is at. Many are excited.
