Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has described Tottenham centre-half Jan Vertonghen as a role model, speaking to Life After Football.
The Belgian international used to play for Ajax himself, where de Ligt came through the ranks and the teenage sensation apparently viewed Vertonghen as an inspiration.
He said: “The defender I looked up to the most was Jan Vertonghen. At Ajax he was number four and captain. I was a big fan of Jan Vertonghen. I still am. I think he was my biggest role model.”
Vertonghen and de Ligt of course also went head to head in the semi-finals of this season’s Champions League, where the teenager showed what he could do by netting against Spurs.

And during a summer when de Ligt could well be on the move with Paris Saint-Germain now leading the race for his signature according to ESPN, those quotes have got many Spurs fans excited.
The chances are that Tottenham wouldn’t pay him anything close to what he wants, but that hasn’t stopped many fans encouraging him to come to north London.
