Marcus Edwards scored again for Portuguese side Vitoria SC on Thursday night as Liga NOS returned from the footballing suspension, netting against Sporting Lisbon – and Tottenham supporters have responded on Twitter.

Edwards, 21, has been in excellent form for Portuguese side Vitoria this season since joining the Europa League outfit last summer from Spurs. Hyped up by fans and even Mauricio Pochettino, Edwards failed to live up to his potential.

Prior to football’s suspension, England Under-21 international Edwards – who only ever played once for Tottenham’s senior side – Edwards had scored six goals and created seven more in 27 appearances for Vitoria.

Returning to action on Thursday, Vitoria travelled to fourth-placed Sporting with the odds stacked firmly against them. But Edwards’ second-half strike – his seventh of the term – saw Sporting nab a point. He posted on Twitter after the match.

A deflected shot from the edge of the area looped up into the air before being superbly controlled by Edwards as he darted into the box from the right flank. From eight yards out, Edwards slammed the ball into the top corner, past Luis Maximiano.

Mauricio Pochettino once compared Edwards to Erik Lamela as per Sky Sports: “He’s small, he’s left-footed, I remember a little bit Lamela when was at River Plate, he had long hair, when he was 14, 15 years old. He took the ball, didn’t give a pass and shot straight away.”

Tottenham supporters reacted to both his post and on Twitter as Edwards continued his excellent first campaign off the books at Spurs. Some want the playmaker back in north London, while others simply applauded his efforts.
