Tottenham fans react as Lucas Alario’s agent says client could have joined on loan

Lucas Alario’s agent has confirmed that his client could have joined Tottenham Hotspur from Bayer Leverkusen on loan in the summer but chose against a move as he did not want to play second fiddle – and Spurs fans have responded.

Alario, 28, scored 12 goals in 36 appearances last season but despite the sale of Kai Havertz to Chelsea, Leverkusen were willing to sanction the loan exit of the eight-time Argentina international. He has entered the final two years of his contract.

Signed for £17million in the summer of 2017 from River Plate, Alario has since had a hand in 54 goals during his 105 Leverkusen games – scoring 41 and creating 13. Spurs were impressed by that goalscoring rate and tried to sign him on loan.

That is according to Alario’s agent Pedro Aldave, who has told TNT Sports that the north Londoners made an approach to lure the Argentine to the Premier League as back-up to Harry Kane. However, Aldave states his client did not want to be back-up.

“We had opportunities to go out on loan and he chose to stay,” Aldave said. “We had the chance to join Tottenham on loan who are a top side, but to watch the matches from the stands, it didn’t work for us.”

Instead, Alario has remained at Leverkusen and it is a decision that has paid off – enormously. Alario is in the form of his life, scoring an impressive five goals in seven league and cup appearances including a brace against Augsburg last weekend.

Tottenham fans reacted on Twitter to the news that Alario could have been wearing a Spurs shirt this season and it is largely a mixed reaction. Some understand the decision not to join, while others think it is weak not to rival Kane as competition.

Others are happy with Carlos Vinicius, who has joined on loan from Benfica.
