Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday night as Atletico Madrid produced a stunning display to win 3-2 on the night at Anfield – and Tottenham fans have reacted to the right-back’s display.
Trippier, 29, missed the first leg for Atleti as he was sidelined with a groin injury. He has otherwise been first choice for Diego Simeone’s men throughout the campaign, keeping out Croatia international Sime Vrsaljko.
The 19-time England international, who played 114 times for Tottenham before his £22million (ESPN) move to Atleti in the summer, has returned from the muscle problem and saw out the first 90 minutes – before being replaced before extra-time.
Gini Wijnaldum brought the tie level in the first half, executing an excellent header. Liverpool dominated proceedings, hitting the bar through Andy Robertson in the second half – while Atleti were limited to hardly any chances.
Roberto Firmino put Liverpool 2-1 up, but substitute Marcos Llorente scored twice in extra-time for Atletico Madrid to bring the score back to 2-2 on the night. Alvaro Morata scored in the final seconds to make it 3-2, and 4-2 on aggregate.
Tottenham fans reacted to Trippier’s performance, with the overriding feeling that they feel relieved to have sold the former Manchester City and Burnley defender – while some supporters think their club made a mistake in selling him.
