Gedson Fernandes is reportedly set to leave Tottenham Hotspur ahead of schedule and return to parent club Benfica in the January transfer window after both clubs decided to cancel his loan – and Spurs fans have responded on Twitter.

Gedson, 21, joined Tottenham in January 2020 on loan from Benfica. The midfielder had a permanent option included in his 18-month loan deal, with the hype surrounding the midfielder somewhat high given he has played 59 times for Benfica.

However, it was not to be. Fast forward almost a year into his 18 months at Spurs and he has just 13 senior appearances to his name. Despite Tottenham playing in the Europa League, he has managed just one appearance this season.

That came in the Carabao Cup against Chelsea, in which he was subbed off just after the hour mark. Portuguese website Jounal Noticias have claimed that both Benfica and Tottenham have agreed to end his loan spell.

Hardly a surpising outcome given his lack of game time. Even midfielders such as Harry Winks and Dele Alli are struggling to get a chance in the team, meaning it was always going to be impossible for Gedson to get some minutes this season.

Tottenham supporters reacted to the news and the overriding feeling is that his loan being cancelled is a move that suits all parties involved. However, some Spurs fans say he was a “waste of talent” and that Jose Mourinho could have used him more.
