Alfie Devine has caught the eye of Tottenham Hotspur supporters since the 16-year-old joined the north London club, and he was in the headlines on Monday once again – prompting reaction from fans on social media.

Still only 16, Devine joined the club from cash-strapped Wigan in the summer and has since excelled in a Spurs shirt. Scoring twice in seven Under-18 Premier League games from midfield, he was promoted to the second string.

He has since played four times in Premier League 2, including Monday’s outing. It was an enthralling clash that saw Spurs play the likes of Harvey White, Jack Clarke and Dane Scarlett – who have all made senior debuts this season.

Monday’s match really had everything. Petr Cech returned to start in goal at 38 for Chelsea, while Drinkwater played in midfield. Spurs were 2-0 up at the break, but Chelsea came back to win 3-2.

Indeed, Jubril Okedina and Scarlett put Spurs 2-0 up inside the first 20, but a brace from Myles Peart-Harris and a Marcel Lewis goal completed the comeback. The flashpoint happened on 75 minutes, though.

Devine shows bravery, though perhaps inexperience, as he flies into a tackle on Premier League winner Drinkwater. He clatters the ex-Leicester man, Drinkwater reacts angrily, kicking out at Devine. Handbags ensue.

The referee has little option but to send both players off, and Tottenham supporters have reacted on Twitter to Devine’s tackle – which showed both recklessness but at just 16, a fearlessness to play with those much his senior.
