Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland both had offers reportedly rejected by Southend United on deadline day for teenage striker Charlie Kelman – and Spurs fans have reacted on Twitter to the news.

The Daily Echo claim that Spurs and Sunderland both saw bids thrown out by League One club Southend, who are managed by Sol Campbell. Kelman, 18, has clocked up 12 appearances this season for Southend – and 23 in total.

The Basildon-born striker, who has been called by USA’s Under-20 squad, has scored six goals this season despite Southend sitting second bottom in League One with just 16 points so far this season. Kelman has also spent time on the sidelines, injured.

His form has been a shining light in a poor season for Southend and it has not gone unnoticed. Both Spurs and Sunderland tried to sign Kelman, but Southend made their position on the youngster clear – that he was not for sale.

Kelman has been linked with Spurs in the past and has a contract at Roots Hall until the summer of 2021. He is able to play out wide or up front, and would have given Troy Parrott some competition as the next teenage striker to break through.

However, a move to sign Kelman was rejected by Southend and he has stayed at the League One club – though a summer move could be in the offing. Spurs fans reacted after hearing of said bid, with many questioning why Parrott is not given a chance.
