Christian Eriksen scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot on Wednesday night as Denmark upset the odds to beat England 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League – and Tottenham supporters have reacted on Twitter to the playmaker’s display.
Eriksen, 28, started alongside Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel and plenty of other Danish stars as they looked to get a surprise result at Wembley. Harry Maguire helped them on their way.
A poorly-timed tackle Youssuf Poulsen saw him earn a yellow card in the fifth minute, and his second came on the half-hour mark. A poor first touch and then a desperate lunge on Kasper Dolberg saw the Manchester United captain sent off.
Denmark were then controversially awarded a penalty – a decision that Chris Sutton labelled “poor” on BBC Radio 5 Live. Former Tottenham man Eriksen placed the ball on the spot in his 100th Denmark cap, and coolly netted to put Denmark 1-0 up.
The scoreline remained the same as Denmark took advantage of their numerical advantage. Eriksen showed glimpses of class, but it was more of a defensive effort throughout as England pushed for an equaliser.
Since his move to Inter, the £260,000-a-week star (Guardian) has struggled in Italy – with four goals in 28 games. But it is clear that form is temporary and class is permanent, as he continues to shine for his country. Spurs fans applauded their old player.
