Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers was guilty of conceding a penalty against West Bromwich Albion on Monday night as he continues to struggle on loan at Stoke City – and Spurs fans have hammered their young centre-back.
The 21-year-old has left Spurs for a fourth time on loan, joining Stoke but the United States international is failing to provide the quality that so many had hoped – given his early potential that saw him shine through the ranks at Spurs.
He has since been on loan at Swansea City, Sheffield United and Ipswich Town. On Monday night, managerless Stoke were tasked with taking on promotion contenders West Brom at the Britannia Stadium. Slaven Bilic’s side won with ease.
Matt Phillips gave the Baggies the lead in the eighth minute, and it looked from that moment on that West Brom would cruise to three points and return to the top of the Championship table. West Brom enjoyed 62% possession, despite being away.
If Stoke had any hope of nabbing a point, Carter-Vickers prevented them from doing so as he dived in recklessly on Grady Diangana inside the penalty area to concede a spot-kick. He was lucky not to see red, only picking up a yellow.
Hal Robson-Kanu scored from the spot to give the Baggies all three points. Tottenham fans reacted to footage of Carter-Vickers’ appalling tackle on West Ham loanee Diangana, and the majority believe he has little future at Spurs.

Why is he still on the Spurs payroll? One of the worst defenders I’ve ever seen. https://t.co/W3QHKfazDh

Yep. just sell. What’s the point of all these loans. Then he leaves on a free anyway.
