An early goal like the one Tottenham conceded in Saturday’s Champions League final against Liverpool is always going to distort the game.
The Reds were handed a goal without truly needing to execute their gameplan and were able to invite Tottenham’s pressure onto them for the rest of the night.
Spurs settled into a passing rhythm that was slow, steady and safe to recover from the initial shock of Mo Salah’s penalty, but did not step up through the gears past that as the match wore on.
Legendary midfielder Andrea Pirlo noticed that working on Italian TV, via the Sun, and took aim at two Spurs players in particular for that – Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen.

Pirlo said: “Tottenham showed no character. There were players like Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen who didn’t want the ball. There was very little quality in midfield and the penalty incident made all the difference.”
And Tottenham fans did not rush to the defence of the midfield duo, instead agreeing with Pirlo’s damning assessment.
One supporter labelled the duo as ‘passengers’ and we’ve put together the best of the reaction as the Tottenham fans queued up to bash the pair’s performances…
