Japhet Tanganga played 71 minutes for Tottenham in their pre-season defeat to Manchester United – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter liked what they saw from him.

The 20-year-old defender started the friendly in Shanghai and also featured in the previous game against Juventus.

He’s getting plenty of minutes around the first-team group during pre-season, but is yet to make his senior bow in a competitive game.

Tanganga is a powerful defender that has come through the academy and it looks like he’s now edging his way into senior contention under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The North London club did end up losing 2-1 to Manchester United, despite Lucas Moura scoring in the second-half with a defected shot.

But there were still positives to take from the friendly match and the rise of several youngsters is certainly one.

A selection of Spurs fans on social media were impressed Tanganga, as he held his own well against Manchester United’s high-profile attackers.

The young centre-back has great strength and speed, while Pochettino has shown he’s prepared to put faith in the academy in the past.

He’s nowhere near the finished article yet, but has some brilliant senior teammates to learn from and he’s got to be close to a full senior debut.
