The Champions League may not see a game as exciting as last night’s clash between Manchester City and Tottenham in their second leg, quarter-final encounter for a long, long time.

Goals at each end, VAR decisions and an away goals victory made for perhaps the most thrilling night in Spurs’ recent history.

For Dele Alli, it was touch and go whether he would be fit to feature before kick-off, having sustained a wrist injury in the first leg.

But the midfielder, who the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick reports earns £150,000 at Spurs, battled to get himself into contention.

And as Tottenham looked to flood the centre of the pitch, even after Moussa Sissoko went off injured, Alli was forced to play in a deeper role than he is used to, offering a more mature and disciplined performance for the good of the team.

He did exactly that and Spurs fans were keen to take to Twitter to praise the England international for his contribution after a night of high drama that surely has them dreaming of June’s final in Madrid…
