Tottenham fans panic over tough tackle on Giovani Lo Celso but they’ve got it wrong

Tottenham new-boy Giovani Lo Celso limped out of Argentina’s 0-0 draw with Chile last night, causing some supporters to panic online.

The midfielder has not been fit to start a game for Spurs yet, but played from the off for his country. Yet, some Tottenham fans were worried when footage emerged of a heavy challenge on his ankle.

For a friendly match, it was a heavy blow and because Tottenham fans have seen so many of their star turns struck down by injury in recent times, they immediately feared the worst.

But Argentina’s official Twitter account tweeted out after the match that Lo Celso has injured his left groin – not the right ankle which took the blow.

That means that the supporters, some of whom made an amateur, premature diagnosis of months on the sidelines, have got it wrong in their haste.

Admittedly, it isn’t ideal that a player who has been protected so lightly by Tottenham has picked up an injury on international duty, but there’s no need to panic about the challenge doing him serious damage at this stage.

It remains to be seen when Mauricio Pochettino will hand his countryman his first start but he threw him into the heat of the north London derby when Spurs were on the rack so Lo Celso is likely close.

The fans will hope the groin problem isn’t anything major and keep their fingers crossed he isn’t on the receiving end of any more heavy challenges.
