Tottenham fans on Twitter question what Lloris has to prove over new deal
Hugo Lloris has been one of Tottenham’s best players for almost a decade.
The Frenchman has been one of the few constants in Tottenham’s rise from Europa League fodder to the side that made the Champions League final.
However, the Frenchman is reportedly set to get a new contract at Spurs – on the condition that he continues his consistent performances (Alasdair Gold).
That’s news that just doesn’t sit well with the supporters.
The Lilywhites have become accustomed to seeing Lloris bail them out of tough situations and they believe he has very little to prove.
It’s hard to argue with that either.
Lloris has amassed 376 appearances for Tottenham and kept 129 clean sheets in the process (Transfermarkt).
Given his loyalty to the club and his impressive number of clean sheets, it seems ludicrous he still has to prove himself to get a new contract.
There are question marks over what will happen regarding the #1 shirt at Tottenham.
Over the summer the Lilywhites went out and brought in Pierliugi Gollini from Atalanta on an initial loan deal with the option to buy (Sky Sports).
This was a deal done with both the short and long-term in mind.
In the short-term, Gollini would play second fiddle to Lloris as he acclimatised to life at Spurs.
Yet in the long-term, he would take over from Lloris at the end of the Frenchman’s contract next summer.
As much as the fans love Lloris, if he does get a new deal it would throw a spanner in the works of the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeping department.
Gollini won’t want to miss out on two, potentially even three, years of being a number 1 goalkeeper, so what happens between now and the summer will certainly be interesting.

Hugo doesn’t need to prove his place in the team wtf he’s been world class for years now, taking about a good run of form like he’s a youth player— Jamie (@thfcjamie_1) September 9, 2021
weird in that… he’s been consistent for YEARS lol, and the entire last season. why would a few more weeks change anything unless they’re like ‘well grandad hugo’s playing 300+ games, time for him to lose form’— foootttbbbaaalll (@foootttbbbaaall) September 9, 2021
Hugo doesn’t have to prove anything. He’s our captain and we would have lost many a game without him keeping goal.— Adam (@starlord_adam) September 9, 2021
Wonder what we signed Gollini for. Presumed he was going to take over as number 1 next year, otherwise what a terrible career move for him and I’d question him a bit.— DAN (@YidVids) September 9, 2021
I’d love Hugo to stay another couple of seasons after this one.— It all seems a bit trivial now (@MattyFrench82) September 9, 2021
He’s world-class level and whoever we replaced him with would likeky mean we’d concede far more
Doesn’t need to show anything, he’s the only one in the squad whose place shouldn’t be up for debate. An extension should be offered to him regardless.— Mani (@AMoneyyy18) September 9, 2021
He’s been consistently outstanding for the last ten years.— Gareth McCarter (@g2mcc) September 9, 2021
This should be a given! OUR Captain deserves it at least. #COYS— JasonSpurs (@JDalesenior) September 9, 2021
