Tottenham Hotspur are set to contest their first pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday.

Thomas Frank is set to manage Tottenham for the first time as the Lilywhites head to Reading for a 3pm BST kick-off.

However, there are still some loose ends to tie up, with the futures of several Tottenham stars currently up in the air.

Son Heung-min is one such player, with his contract expiring at the end of next season and uncertainty reigning over his future.

Frank, who held his pre-match press conference on Friday, spoke about the Spurs captaincy, and some fans were not happy with what he said involving Son.

Tottenham fans unhappy at prospect of Son Heung-min losing captaincy

Son was Tottenham’s captain last season, and many would have assumed that he would remain captain unless he was to leave.

However, Frank refused to say whether Son would have the armband next season, claiming he’s yet to decide which player would get it.

“Good question,” Frank said when asked by football.london’s Alasdair Gold who his captain will be.

“I haven’t decided anything on that. I have a long list of bullet points I need to get through and I take them in the right order.

“He (Son) was the captain last year and when we play two 45s tomorrow, Son and Romero will be the two captains, but I haven’t made a final decision.”

Some Tottenham fans feel Son’s captaincy is non-negotiable and Frank’s comments didn’t go down well with them.

One fan wrote on X: “Robbing Son out of the captain’s armband when it could be his last season here would be diabolical.”

Another supporter said: “Any goodwill I had towards Frank evaporating LMFAO @SpursOfficial you trying to force Son out or what?”

One fan said in response to the above tweet: “Exactly! But he invited the extra discussion and made Son’s haters feel like they were justified all along!”

Another supporter wrote: “Son is the perfect captain, he’s united the squad and everyone fought for him 200% in that European final because he’s a loved captain and a respected one.”

Another said: “Not my gaffer. Already playing with fire.”

TBR Football understands that Tottenham have informed Son that he can leave the club this summer for the right offer.

What Thomas Frank thinks about Son Heung-min

Despite not confirming whether Son would be captain next season, Frank spoke highly of the player.

He also lauded vice-captain Cristian Romero, another shout for the permanent captaincy.

“Two top players, Sonny, been here 10 years, finally got his his well deserved trophy in the summer,” said Frank. “So important for the team and the club.

“Cristian Romero, World Cup winner, Europa League winner, Copa America winner, very, very important for us as well.

“Both have trained well, setting the standards out there on the training pitch and both will play tomorrow so I’m very happy.”
