Eric Dier has come in for criticism since the turn of the year but the Tottenham man was re-installed to the starting line-up on Sunday and despite the defeat to Man United, he earned praise from some Spurs fans for one moment.
For the previous six Premier League matches, 27-year-old Dier has remained an unused substitute – with Jose Mourinho combining Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez against Villa and Newcastle. Dier came in for Sanchez.
Combining the England man alongside Wales international Rodon, Mourinho will have hoped Spurs might have taken a leap towards the top four with a win. Son Heung-min gave them hope, going 1-0 up at the break.

But goals from Fred, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood saw Spurs suffer another defeat. They now sit in seventh place, six points behind fourth-placed West Ham – and Everton are two behind, with two games in hand.
While Dier was unable to stop United from cruising to three points in the second 45, the £72,000-a-week man (Spotrac) made as many clearances as Rodon and was joint first when it came to aerial duels – as per WhoScored.
During the second 45, Dier produced an excellent block to deny Paul Pogba in what would have been a near-certain goal as the World Cup winner tried to backheel into the net. Many Spurs fans praised him for that specific moment.
