Tottenham fans have praise for left-footed defender after stunning Champions League display on Wednesday night

At the back, Tottenham look fragile. So for Tottenham fans, it will have been frustrating to watch Jan Vertonghen keep a clean sheet against Barcelona.

In their last three league games, Tottenham have conceded nine goals. Another three flew past Hugo Lloris on Sunday in the North London derby.

The ill-feeling at Spurs has never been bigger. Nuno’s pragmatic approach is not going down well, but his attempt to attack on Sunday backfired.

Meanwhile, Benfica produced a stunning 3-0 win over Barcelona on Wednesday. Ronald Koeman’s future at Barcelona is hanging by a thread.

While they remain unbeaten in the league, they have only won three of their six games. The post-Lionel Messi era sees Barca struggling.

What are Tottenham fans saying about Benfica star Vertonghen?

On Wednesday, came arguably the worst result of Koeman’s era. Against a Benfica side that failed to even win the Portuguese league, last term.

A side that included 34-year-old Vertonghen. The left-footer played on the left of a back three, in what is his second season since leaving Spurs.

Alongside Nicolas Otamendi and Lucas Verissimo, Benfica produced an excellent defensive display – with Barca failing to have a shot on target.

Indeed, at the other end, Benfica scored three times – producing a sensational display. Darwin Nunez got two, and Rafa Silva got the other.

Tottenham fans bemoaned Vertonghen’s display. With the current side struggling, supporters questioned why Vertonghen was allowed to go.
