The first half of Tottenham’s match with Borussia Dortmund last night went much the same way as Manchester United’s against Paris Saint-Germain the night before.
Both sides were looking to feel each other out and get the lie of the land, but where PSG took the initiative at Old Trafford on Tuesday, Spurs raced onto the front foot here.
Jan Vertonghen, playing in an unfamiliar left wing-back position and tasked with keeping tabs on Jadon Sancho, grabbed control of the match in the second period.
First, he swung in an outstanding cross for Heung-min Son to volley home and put Spurs 1-o up, before getting on the scoresheet himself when he converted Serge Aurier’s centre.

It was a staggering performance of power and poise by a player more comfortable at centre-half and was a massive reason why Tottenham now have one foot in the last eight.
By the time the second leg rolls around, Harry Kane should have returned and Dele Alli will have a chance of making it too.
So it was a fantastic evening for the Spurs supporters and they were keen to show their love for Vertonghen after his performance swung the tie in their side’s direction…
