Tottenham fans frustrated by Nuno 'stubbornness' against Villa on Sunday

Tottenham edged past Aston Villa but despite the win, fans were frustrated by some perceived “stubbornness” from Nuno – and his usage of Bryan Gil.

Son Heung-min provided the difference for Spurs as he laid on two assists for Nuno’s side to beat Villa. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg opened the scoring.

Receiving a neat pass from Son, Hojbjerg then curled home a lovely effort from 20 yards. The Dane calmly passed the ball into the bottom corner.

Spurs, though, failed to hold onto their lead. A nice Villa move ended with England international Ollie Watkins tapping a Matt Targett cross home.

But Spurs showed a bit of grit, a bit of steely desire to win the game and they were back in front moments later. Son burst down the left.

His pass across the six-yard box looked as if it was tapped in by Lucas Moura, but the goal was recorded as a Targett own goal – somewhat harshly.

Tottenham beat Villa: Fans annoyed as Nuno gives Gil a few minutes

It was a win, it was a positive performance, it was on the front foot, and it was a display in which Spurs created chances.

Yes, they conceded. But the relationship between Eric Dier and Cristian Romero is improving. Nuno has learnt to play with two holding midfielders.

Tanguy Ndombele is an issue. But he has an established front three. He’s close to his best side; Emerson Royal producing his best display for Spurs.

But Gil is a favourite among Spurs fans already. His performances in Europe are catching the eye and supporters want to see more of him.

Tottenham fans have reacted on Twitter to Gil coming on in the 89th minute, and many believe he should have got longer on Sunday.
