Tottenham fans discuss Serge Aurier signing for Villarreal
Serge Aurier has signed for Villarreal after leaving Tottenham during the summer. The Ivorian has checked into Unai Emery’s squad as a free agent.
The right-back was released by Spurs during the summer transfer window. That has allowed him to sign for a new club and he can be registered to play for Villarreal immediately.
The 28-year-old spent four years at Tottenham. He arrived in North London from PSG in 2017 and would become a pretty regular member of the team.
He made 110 appearances for Spurs, scoring eight goals and registering 17 assists in the team.
It will be the player’s first foray into Spanish football. He has previously spent time in France with PSG, Lens and Toulouse.
Aurier is the current Ivory Coast captain. He has played 70 times for his country and Emery has landed a vastly experienced player.
Disappointingly, Aurier missed a lot of Tottenham’s run to the Champions League Final during 2018/19. He played just five times in the competition, making the bench for the final in Madrid.
Now, he will embark on a new challenge with Villarreal and hope to silence some of his Tottenham critics.
What have Tottenham fans said about Aurier signing for Villarreal?
Some have sent their best wishes to the Spaniards, with Aurier known for his erratic tendencies in and around the penalty area at Tottenham.
Others are once again dumbfounded that a player has left Spurs for an upgrade in club. Villarreal are after all a Champions League club, although Aurier won’t be able to be registered for that until the knockout stages.
They felt certain Aurier would end up at a lesser club, although that hasn’t proved to be the case.
Following the defender’s switch to Villarreal, we looked at what Tottenham fans were saying on Twitter about the international.
