Sam Johnstone produced an excellent performance in front of Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho on Sunday afternoon amid reports Spurs are looking at the West Brom stopper – and Spurs fans discussed his efforts on Twitter.
Johnstone, 27, has endured a difficult season in the Premier League. Playing in 22 of West Brom’s 23 games, he has conceded a whopping 52 goals in that time – managing to hold onto just two clean sheets in what has been a busy season.
However, Johnstone is far from the source of that leak – with the English goalkeeper performing well and keeping opposition sides at bay on a regular basis. Against Tottenham, had it not been for Johnstone, the score could have easily been doubled.
According to WhoScored, of the goalkeepers who have played more than 20 games this season (15), Johnstone has the highest amount of saves per game ratio at 4.1. Clearly then, it is the defence in front of him that are failing to keep attackers at bay.

That was clear on Sunday. Johnstone did well to beat away a powerful right-footed effort from Harry Kane, he held a curling effort from Son Heung-min when many would parry it – and finger-tipped a Davinson Sanchez header away from goal.
He produced an excellent performance but Sam Allardyce’s side simply failed to repel a dominant Spurs side, buoyed by the return of their talisman in Kane. His amount of goals conceded has not deterred Tottenham, according to reports.
Spurs have seemingly looked past that, considering his ability to make saves – and that he is decent with his feet. Again, of the Premier League goalkeepers ot have played 20 or more, he is second when it comes to accurate long balls – as per WhoScored.
During the January window, The Sun claimed that Spurs were fearful that Mauricio Pochettino being positioned at Paris Saint-Germain and that PSG were looking for a goalkeeper might prove tempting for captain Hugo Lloris.

That proved to be just hearsay, at least for January. But the report also claims that Spurs have lined-up two English replacements in the form of Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, and West Brom’s Johnstone.
Johnstone was initially sent out on loan by Mourinho during the latter’s time at Old Trafford and he has since emerged as a much better goalkeeper for it. With West Brom edging closer to relegation, a move to Spurs might prove tempting.
It does not state how much West Brom rate Johnstone at in terms of price, but it is hardly likely to be a super expensive figure given his lack of international caps and the fact the Baggies paid Manchester United just £6.5million in 2018 (BBC Sport).
Tottenham supporters reacted on Twitter to Johnstone’s performance amid reports their club were considering an approach and could still look to sign Johnstone depending on Lloris’ future. Many were impressed with his efforts between the sticks.
