Tottenham have reportedly made an enquiry to sign one of Antonio Conte’s old players, Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij. They are not alone in doing so – but nevertheless, Tottenham fans would love de Vrij to arrive in North London.

De Vrij, 29, was a regular during Conte’s reign as Inter Milan manager. But the 55-time Netherlands international is about to enter the last 18 months of his contract under Simone Inzaghi – a January offer might tempt Inter.

FC Inter News state that Inzaghi is keen to keep him. But they also claim that Tottenham – along with Newcastle and Barcelona – have made enquiries to land the ex-PSV star. He has played 142 times for Inter since joining in 2018.

Tottenham do have options. Eric Dier has been sensational, Ben Davies is solid on the left of the three and Cristian Romero is first-choice on the right, when fit. Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez are cover.

What are Tottenham fans saying about a potential move for de Vrij?

De Vrij is a top, top defender. He is a throwback to the kind of no-nonsense centre-backs that are starting to die out. The likelihood is, though, that he is not a priority for Conte. A left-footed defender is likely to top the list.

With Dier and Rodon perfect in the middle, and Romero, Sanchez and Tanganga options on the right – Spurs need competition for Davies. Tanganga played in that role against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Tottenham fans have reacted on Twitter and many would love to see Mino Raiola’s client brought to Spurs. But there is also a feeling that given Dier’s form and the recent signing of Romero, that he might not be a priority.
