Tottenham fans criticise Lamela for his lacklustre contribution in semi-final defeat

Mauricio Pochettino didn’t have too many options in terms of personnel for Tottenham’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea last night, due to the club’s growing injury crisis.

But he chose to spring a surprise on Maurizio Sarri with his formation; fielding Erik Lamela in attack alongside Fernando Llorente, as opposed to out wide in a 4-3-3 system.

It didn’t really work out for the Argentine; he was unable to get on the ball or link up with Llorente, but remained on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes.

When Lucas Moura was summoned from the bench, it might have made more sense to take off Lamela, as opposed to Llorente, whose confidence was high after his impressive second half header clawed Spurs back into the match.

Lamela’s performance did not impress the watching Spurs fans, who took to Twitter to express their disappointment in his contribution after their side were eventually eliminated after a 4-2 defeat on penalties.

Lamela did score his spot-kick, but that did not spare him from the ire of his own supporters, and we’ve put together some of the reaction…
