Kieran Trippier failed to prevent his Atletico Madrid side crashing out of the Champions League on Wednesday night as Chelsea earned a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge – but he has earned praise from Tottenham fans, who compared him to Matt Doherty.

Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game last time out as Chelsea beat Atleti in Spain, and that aggregate score was extended on Wednesday night. After a number of scares, Hakim Ziyech opened the scoring after a brilliant counter attack.

It was 2-0n late on when substitute Emerson Palmieri netted. Trippier, 30, lasted 69 minutes before being replaced by Diego Simeone – as he failed to prevent Atleti from crashing out at the last 16 stage. He is likely to return to England soon.

Indeed, the ex-Manchester City and Burnley defender is likely to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England side – having impressed in the 24 matches he has played this season. He has helped Atleti sit top of La Liga, with five assists.

Spurs sold Trippier to Atleti for a fee of £20million (Guardian) in the summer of 2019, after he had clocked up 114 games for Tottenham. Right now, Spurs are struggling on the right side of their defence, despite signing Ireland ace Doherty.

Doherty was poor on Sunday during the North London derby defeat and Serge Aurier is struggling to get past the ex-Wolves man. Tottenham fans reacted on Twitter to Trippier’s performance, comparing him with Doherty.
