Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has signed a new contract – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter are wildly celebrating the news on Friday morning.

Spurs have confirmed on their official Twitter account that the Belgian centre-back has penned a new deal that keeps him at the club until 2023.

His deal was due to expire in the summer and an exit from North London looked on the cards, but he’s now committed his future to stay for the long-term.

The 30-year-old has been a major favourite since he joined back in 2015 from Atletico Madrid and he’s still a key player in the current backline.

He was an ever-present during the Mauricio Pochettino era and has continued to be a first pick since the arrival of new manager Jose Mourinho midway through this campaign.

A selection of Spurs supporters on social media are delighted to see Alderweireld resolve his future and there were concerns within the fanbase that he could exit in the summer.

But it looks like he’s going to be pivotal to Mourinho’s plans moving forward and the no-nonsense defender has given the club a boost.
