Tottenham signed off their season with a 2-2 draw against Everton yesterday to seal Champions League qualification for yet another campaign.
It’s been a tricky season as a squad who struggled with fatigue after the World Cup, as well as their players returning late to a squad not supplemented with any new signings.
But despite that, Tottenham stand on the brink of a Champions League final and have secured a seat at Europe’s top table once again, with relative ease.
They were never going to keep pace with the rampant pace of the title chasers but Mauricio Pochettino may perhaps be a little disappointed that his side slumped to fourth when at one point they were comfortably third and on the coat tails of the top two.
For a club that has not been prolific in the transfer market, it is imperative that they keep their top talent and that’s why the contract situation of Toby Alderweireld is so precarious.
The man signed for a reported (Guardian) £11.4m in 2015 has just a year left on his current deal, but the Telegraph claim that triggering that extension also meant that the Belgian international now has a £25m release clause.
It remains to be seen whether anyone will pay it but the Tottenham fans are absolutely desperate for him to stay, as shown by the reaction on Twitter in the aftermath of yesterday’s game.
Sign the ting Toby
