Tottenham fans applaud Vincent Janssen as striker helps Monterrey win Liga MX title

Vincent Janssen has posted on Twitter after the striker helped Monterrey win the Liga MX Apertura over the weekend with a penalty-shootout win over Club America – and Tottenham fans have reacted to his post.

Janssen, who was sold to Monterrey in the summer for £6million (Goal), has helped his new side earn some silverware just a matter of months after joining the club. He has already become somewhat of a favourite among Monterrey fans.

The 25-year-old scored just six goals in 42 games for Spurs – four of which were from the penalty spot. But since his move to Monterrey, he has already netted 10 times in 22 league and cup outings – 12 of which have come from the bench.

It is an incredible record to have given more than half his outings have been as a substitute. He continued his excellent start by helping Monterrey win the Apertura trophy, the first of two league titles the Mexican league has an offer this season.

Unlike any other league, the Liga MX is split into two campaigns. Between the summer and December, teams fight for the Apertura trophy, and from January to May, they battle for the Clausaura title. It means there are two champions per season.

Janssen came off the bench in both play-off final legs against Club America, with the two sides going into extra-time on Sunday after drawing 2-2. He netted from the penalty spot in the shootout, as Monterrey won 4-2 on spot-kicks.

The Netherlands international posted on Twitter after the match, posting a selfie on the plane home – still in his Monterrey kit and proudly wearing an Apertura winners’ medal round his neck. Spurs fans reacted to his post.
