Tottenham face losing star duo as Argentina problems continue
Tottenham Hotspur could go into their next two Premier League games without Christian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso.
The South American pair were released to play for Argentina, despite the fact it is on the UK’s red list.
Tottenham released the pair on the basis that they would be returning after La Albiceleste’s huge World Cup qualifier against Brazil.
However, Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni has now claimed that he is unaware of the agreement:
“We gave the list for the three games and there are no doubts about that, Scaloni said following Argentina’s 3-1 win over Venezuela on Thursday.
“The players are here to play all three games. We never had a refusal from the clubs. We spoke and reached a conclusion that they had to come.” (Sky Sports).
This now means that, as opposed to just missing one game for Tottenham in the Premier League, the pair will have to sit out three.
First up is Crystal Palace, which Romero and Lo Celso are out of anyway.
However, if they stay for the Bolivia game on Thursday then Tottenham will be without them for both their Conference League clash with Rennes on 16 September, as well as their huge game versus Chelsea the following Sunday.
Neither of the Argentine’s have started in the Premier League for Spurs this season, although they have both played every minute across the two Conference League legs against Pacos de Ferreira.
If the pair were to be back in time for Rennes and Chelsea it would be a huge boost for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
The Argentines would provide such much needed rotation in midfield and defence, and the sooner this dispute is over the better.
