Tottenham face baffling Real Madrid negotiations over Sergio Reguilon buyback

Real Madrid are set to try and bring down Tottenham’s Reguilon price.

The Spanish left-back signed for Tottenham in summer 2020 but reportedly has a 40m Euro buyback clause.

However, the most recent transfer news to come out of the Spanish capital is that Los Blancos don’t want to pay that.

According to Defensa Central, Madrid are undecided on whether or not to re-sign Reguilon.

However, even if they are to try and bring him back, they don’t want to pay the full 40m Euros.

That’s where this story has come from that Real Madrid want to try and negotiate down the buyback clause.

The 24-year-old left-back is seen as a 30-33m Euro player by the Spanish giants.

As far as Tottenham will be concerned, the buyback clause is in the contract and will have to be met.

Daniel Levy is a wily operator and will not budge when it comes to negotiations.

Real Madrid will know just this too.

They famously had to deal with Levy when they signed Gareth Bale for a then world record fee in 2013.

Tottenham fans may not be universal fans of Levy, but situations like these are when you want him in your corner.

Arguably, left-back is one of the few positions in which Spurs are set.

In Reguilon, the Lilywhites have a wonderful first choice option.

Then the likes of Ben Davies and Ryan Sessegnon can deputise.

Spurs won’t want to see this change and will be keen to hold onto their wonderful Spanish defender.

However, should they receive a bid of the previously agreed amount from Real Madrid, they may not have a choice.

That clause expires in the summer of 2022, so it could be a nervous wait for Spurs fans until he’s safe at Spurs from a Madrid return.
