Tottenham defender can go from zero to hero if Spurs-linked manager joins – TBR View

Tottenham are being linked with Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte, who is a manager that could help Matt Doherty go from zero to hero.

Spurs, who sacked Jose Mourinho last month, are being heavily linked with an entire host of managers to become their next full-time head coach. Ryan Mason is interim boss until the end of the season, but the speculation is intensifying.

Corriere dello Sport has reported that Spurs have been in contact with the representatives of Inter manager Conte, who recently helped them win the Serie A league title.

The report claims that the 51-year-old Italian is still committed to the final year of his contract with Inter, but a move to north London hasn’t been completely ruled out at this stage. Additionally, two parties were even at a stage of discussing the current Spurs squad.

It remains to be seen if they can prize him away from Italy, but one Spurs player that should be desperate for that to happen is Doherty.

Doherty, who joined for £15million (Sky Sports) last summer, has in truth had a really poor first season.

It’s fair to say the 29-year-old has been a flop signing, but Conte would be someone that could turn him from zero to hero.

The main reason he’s struggled so much this year with Spurs is that he’s been asked to play as a conventional right-back, but he attracted interest after being so effective at former club Wolverhampton Wanderers for years as a right wing-back.

If he was given a run of games next season as a wing-back, there is every chance he could turn his Spurs career around.

Conte, who previously turned Victor Moses into a quality wing-back when he won the Premier League title with Chelsea, has preferred in management to play a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 formation that implements the use of wing-backs.

Spurs can expect to see a brand new Doherty if reported target Conte does end up joining.
