Tottenham could do much worse than to target Brighton defender Lewis Dunk

Tottenham Hotspur stand to lose two central defenders next summer in Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

The Belgian duo have both entered into their final years in their contracts and are set to become free agents as things currently stand.

Alderweireld, who has been frequently linked with a move away from the club, feels the likeliest of the two to leave, with Vertonghen supposedly in talks.

He recently said that he was feeling great ‘in every single way’ at the club, but the Guardian report the length of the proposed deal is the sticking point.

Even if 32-year-old Vertonghen does soon agree an extension, he will not be sticking around long-term given his advancing years.

Therefore Spurs do need to enter the market for a younger defender soon – and Brighton’s Lewis Dunk could be ideal.

TBR’s view

Dunk was absolutely outstanding when the teams met before the international break and vastly overshadowed both Alderweireld and Vertonghen in the 3-1 win for Brighton.

The Seagulls skipper produces performances to a similar level most weekends, and Brighton supporters love the 27-year-old.

Dunk is one of the most underrated centre-backs in the Premier League, and arguably would have more than just one England cap to his name if he player for a bigger club.

Tottenham, who have a strong English contingent, could do a lot worse than to go after £45,000-a-week star Dunk (Spotrac), who is approaching his prime years.
