Tottenham: Contract extension for star; swap deal for creative midfielder; PSG starlet linked
While Spurs may have had a slow start to the season with a 1-1 draw with big spending Everton, the result emphasised how important Erik Lamela is to the side.
When he first signed he looked seriously off the Premier League pace, but as the seasons have gone by, he’s grown into an instrumental part of the Lilywhites’ line up.
The 24-year-old ran the show against the Toffees and scored the equalising goal, reigniting the fight that seemed absent in his team in the early stages of the game.
With his influence growing, the Tottenham management have taken the initiative and triggered a contract extension in the Argentine’s contract, according to The Independent.
His contract previously ran until 2018, but the extension will prolong it by two years, until 2020.
Lamela had a direct hand in 14 goals last season and will doubtless be vital for Spurs going forward.
Lamela could face new competition for his place in the side, with Inter starlet Marcelo Brozovic linked with a move to the club.
Gianluca di Marzio believes that Inter are trying to reinforce their defence this window, and Brozovic will be used in a swap deal for centre back Jan Vertonghen.
The Croatian had an impressive Euros campaign and Inter would doubtless like to keep hold of him, but the Italian giants are prioritising their back line.
The central midfielder has a fantastic range of passing and holds the ball up well under pressure, as well as being able to play in multiple positions.
Partnered with Victor Wanyama or Eric Dier in the centre of the pitch, they could form a fearsome duo going further into the campaign. The depth could also be vital with Champions League football now a factor.
Vertonghen has been a stalwart under Pochettino at Spurs, so it could be unlikely that the deal will go ahead.
French publication L’Equipe are reporting that PSG forward Jean-Kevin Augustin could move to White Hart lane, according to a reputed Spurs Twitter account.
Despite the signing of the impressive Vincent Janssen, Mauricio Pochettino is still trying to bolster his forward line to support Harry Kane, and Augustin could provide a solid cover option given the amount of games the Lilywhites have to play this season.
The 19-year-old is known for his explosive pace, technical footwork and confidence on the ball.
Augustin had a devastating u-19s Euro 2016, scoring six times in five games and scoring with 50% of his attempts on goal.
Augustin has been widely tipped for a breakout season under new manager Unai Emery, but if Spurs could swoop in, they would be securing a very promising player indeed.
