Report: Speculation forming that Spurs could look to hijack Newcastle's bid for £35m player, but no move yet
Tottenham Hotspur have considered hijacking Newcastle United’s bid for Brazilian midfielder, Bruno Guimarães, although there has been no official approach from Spurs as yet.
Newcastle are said to have agreed a £35m deal with Lyon to bring Guimaraes to St James’ Park. He is set to have a medical in Brazil today, and then be unveiled as a Newcastle player over the weekend.
However, The Northern Echo has reported how Newcastle’s ‘public courting’ of Guimaraes attracted attention from elsewhere. In particular, it’s claimed that Tottenham have considered making their own move for the Lyon star, albeit, as yet, nothing has been forthcoming from the Londoners.
The Echo claims that in the end, Newcastle were the only club to hold formal discussions with Lyon and Guimaraes’ team of representatives and ultimately, a deal is now close for the Mags.
After signing Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier, the addition of Guimaraes feels like a big one for Newcastle.
TBR’s View: Tottenham Doing A Tottenham
Spurs are making themselves look a bit daft in this window. They’ve not got anything over the line and the fact they thought they might nick this deal is almost laughable.
In the last few days, if this Guimaraes rumour is right, then Spurs have missed out on him, Adama Traore, and Luis Diaz all in the space of 24 hours. Either something is really wrong in their recruitment process, or players simply don’t fancy Tottenham.
Newcastle, on the other hand, can celebrate a job well done here. Guimaraes is a marquee signing and could open the door for even more players arriving.
