Report: Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United all want Blackburn starlet Ashley Phillips
There is a transfer scramble underway when it comes to Blackburn Rovers defender Ashley Phillips, with Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester United and Everton all keen on the youngster.
According to The Sun, Tottenham and Everton have been watching Phillips for some time. However, it’s claimed in the report – and in a previous report from the Sun – that it is United and Chelsea who currently head the queue when it comes to doing an actual deal for Phillips.
The teenager, who is still just 16, is under contract at Ewood Park and would therefore command a fee from any potential buyer. But with Rovers slipping away in the race for promotion, Premier League clubs will be feeling confident that they could land him this summer.
Described by Tony Mowbray as a ‘phenomenal young boy’ who has everything a central defender needs, there are certainly high hopes for the Blackburn youngster. Mowbray has been letting Phillips train with the first-team this season as he looks to aid his development in the best possible way.
FootballTransfers ran a review piece of Phillips and in there they spoke of comparisons to Liverpool superstar, Virgil van Dijk. Of course, he’s a long way from that, but it’s quite the compliment for a 16-year-old.
TBR’s View: Phillips Looking The Real Deal
Whoever ends up landing Phillips looks like they’re going to be getting a real player on their hands. We saw over a decade ago when Blackburn moved Phil Jones on that they can develop talent who top clubs want, and Phillips looks like being the next in line.
Tottenham, of course, are likely to be in the mix. They’re not averse to raiding the Championship, as we saw with the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Jack Clarke. Ashley Phillips, then, could well be the next one on the list.
