Tottenham can finally get their man after £18m Anthony Martial heartache in 2015

Tottenham Hotspur tried and failed to sign the French attacker in the summer of 2015.

Tottenham’s interest in Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial rumbles on this week. It got a fresh kick of impetus yesterday when the Frenchman’s agent told RMC Sport that he wants to leave United this summer despite his love for the club.

Spurs have been linked with his services this summer and, when considering the summer of 2015, it is easy to see why.

Three years ago Tottenham were desperate to sign the player. It was reported in numerous circles around England and France that the French attacker was one of Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice targets for the summer.

Back in June 2015, it was even reported that Tottenham had completed such a deal. France Football reported on the 7th June 2015 that Spurs had reached an agreement over a £18 million move for the French attacker. The ‘next Thierry Henry’, as he was then being called, had been scouted heavily by Pochettino and Spurs were ready to bring him in.

It seemed that was premature. The next week saw Sky Sports suggest Spurs had opened talks with Monaco over a deal to sign the young Frenchman, at the time just 19-years-old.

But no deal ever happened.

It seems Spurs were not going to match Monaco’s asking price and, at the end of the transfer window, Manchester United swooped in. The Red Devils paid double what Tottenham seemed willing, with a £36 million deal completed on the 31st August.

Now, wit Martial available again, Tottenham have a second chance at getting hold of a player who could thrive under Mauricio Pochettino’s guidance.

Hopefully, this time, a deal can be found.

Don’t get too excited because Woodward will get strung up by the United faithful if he even attempts to flog the one trick show pony to another English club and given the duplicitous money grabbing attitude of Levy over Spurs players don’t be surprised if Spurs are used as leverage to make a deal with a European side. Of all clubs this window Spurs have made themselves by far the least popular with United.

Chances are that United will now use him as a make weight in another deal, either officially or unofficially and given United have high priority targets at Real Madrid, PSG and Juventus little greedy ole Spurs likely won’t get a look in. After all Spurs have priced any players they have who United might be interested in right out of the market and defenders should be a low priority this summer anyway given how well United’s defence has performed over the last two seasons.

I fancy selling the one trick show pony to Juventus not least because of the irony of them dumping Spurs out of the Champions league this season. Either them or PSG. I’d love to see the sulky brat come up against Neymar’s ego. That would be fun. Either way United should be glad to be shot of such a self indulgent brat, talent or not as it means that there will be much more playing time for Marcus Rashford.

Sadly Martial is proving to be nothing more than a third rate Anelka. There again he was bought by Van Gaal so perhaps we should have expected it.
